- (General Dispatch) – The East Side Community School has made national headlines after its head principal sent a list to students’ parents about how they would bleach their whiteness.
- The director sent the representatives a list of “The 8 White Identities” with the sole purpose of calling attention to the racial situation that still exists in the country.
- Mark Federman is the name of the director from whom this idea was born, inspired by the analysis made by Barnor Hesse, associate professor of African-American studies, who stratified the levels of “whiteness”.
- He divided them as follows: White Supremacist, White Voyeurism, White Privilege, White Benefit, White Confessional, White Critical, White Traitor, White Abolitionist, Going by what is understood in the graph from lowest to highest to an extreme level of racism to not being racist.
- “Anti-racism and the celebration of diversity is at the core of our work on behalf of the young people of New York City, and the East Side Community School’s students, parents and staff partner together to advance equity in their community,”
- “The document in question was shared with the school by parents as a part of ongoing anti-racist work in the school community and is one of many resources the schools utilizes.” In a statement the educational entity assured.
- The principal of the educational entity had already been involved in cases in favor of racial equality when in 2017 he stepped in between a student and an officer after a racially charged altercation.
- The initiative seems to have been well received by parents to create awareness in the family nuclei about the privileges obtained in the United States for having a certain skin color.
