Australia Suspends Some Chinese Programming Channels

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Australia’s public broadcaster SBS will stop broadcasting two Chinese media outlets for communicating prisoner confessions under threat, following an accusation by a human rights group.
  • An Asian human rights group called “safeguard defenders” made the accusation Thursday after China Global Television Network (CRTN) and China Central Television (CCTV) broadcast some 56 coerced prisoner confessions.
  • “Given the serious concerns it raises and the complexity of the material involved, we have taken the decision to suspend the transmission of the foreign-sourced CGTN and CCTV news bulletins while we conduct an assessment of these services,” the SBS representative added.
  • Safeguard Defenders did an excellent job, with the information provided, it was discovered that the Chinese media outlet CGTN was under the influence of CCP.
  • “We consider that CGTNC would be disqualified from holding a license as it is controlled by a body that is ultimately controlled by the Communist Party of China,” said a British regulator.
  • Following the suspension of these media outlets, China responded by suspending the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) World News program on February 12.
  • The Chinese Radio and Television Administration said that such actions prevent true information from being broadcast by “censoring” it, resulting in a media conflict in both nations.
