- (General Dispatch) – A small number of immigrants who had applied for asylum in Great Britain were deported to their countries of origin under a scheme called “block resettlement”, which was only valid at the beginning of the year.
- The “block resettlement” indicated that the immigrants could be relocated to another country that allows them to have citizenship, but these measures have changed since Great Britain decided to leave the European Union.
- When resettlement was still in operation there were about 8600 asylum applications from immigrants of which only 105 were approved, and 20 were unsuccessful, deporting them back to France.
- The English Channel has been the topic of relevance since a large number of immigrants have tried to pass through this channel, even attempting to swim from one end to the other in order to sneak into the neighboring country.
- One of the possible reasons why Great Britain is an option for immigrants is because of the asylum system they offer, unlike the European Union.
- According to the Home Office, “It shows that for too long we have bent our asylum system. We have gone beyond other EU countries. When people insist that we are a small country and accuse us of not doing enough to resettle refugees, it couldn’t be further from the truth.”
- This is not to say that the system welcomes migrants with open arms on the contrary the Ministry of Interior “It highlights how the organization is broken and that is why we have to bring forward the big package of reforms that we are putting together”, added the source from the Ministry of Interior.
- Since January the “Dublin agreement” ceased to have effect, preventing migrants from having the right to apply for asylum just as soon as they set foot on the shores of Great Britain.
