Teachers to return to the classroom in April in L.A

  • By Joergen Haisem
  • (General Dispatch) –  The Los Angeles teachers’ union has reached an agreement for teachers to return to the classroom in April.
  • Although the return to classes has been announced. This will be on a semi-face-to-face basis with mixed schedules, certain assignments will be online and others face-to-face, elementary school children will enter the second week of April and high school children two weeks later.
  • “The agreement provides for schools to reopen when Los Angeles County is at the red level in accordance with state school guidelines, for all staff to have access to the COVID vaccine and for schools to be kept clean and safe” said LAUSD.
  • Superintendent Austin Beutner and United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily Myart-Cruz said this opening of schools must be done with planning where teachers are pre-vaccinated and follow preventive biosecurity measures.
  • The teachers’ union proposed an agreement in which they list the requirements, the most relevant of which are that the children must be continuously tested for covid, the use of masks, conditioning of the classrooms and constant sanitation of the areas.
  • In addition, for those children who choose to watch classes online, the school must provide free meals that must be delivered to their homes.
  • The teachers’ union has been reluctant to return to face-to-face classes unless their proposed agreement is met and Governor Gavin Newsom announces and enforces the “red level”.
  • On the other hand, the children’s representatives are upset by the measures adopted by the teachers’ union, saying that the controls are excessive and that they want it as an excuse to avoid returning to the classroom.
