Russia Maintains Gradual Blockade Against Twitter

  • (General Dispatch) –  The Russian government has slowed down the use of twitter after having conflicts because the social network came to contain inappropriate content despite being warned by Russian authorities.
  • The Kremlin has urged people to avoid using the social network, and they have not taken the decision to block it completely because there is still a lot of content to be cleaned up and monitored by the authorities.
  • Although the Russian government has stated that this measure is to protect citizens, some opponents have criticized this action, as they see it as a way to censor one of the information channels.
  • The telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, said it will limit the speed at which the social network can be accessed, as well as complicating the uploading of any type of content by users.
  • Roskomnadzor accused Twitter of maintaining content on its site that encourages minors to commit suicide, includes child pornography and also contains data on drug use. The regulator said it has repeatedly asked Twitter to remove illegal content.
  • The Russian government warned that it will be monitoring the social network for any content that is offensive to the Kremlin, and if the social network fails to act it will likely be blocked in the country.
  • A Russian media outlet said that the large social network has spoken out against the accusations, denying that it promotes such content, and disagrees with any kind of child pornography.
  • Although certain measures were applied, it stated that it will make certain changes to the platform to avoid the measures adopted by the regulatory company affecting the user experience.
