Mexican President Proposes a Visa for Migrants to Biden

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador plans to reach an agreement with President Biden at the upcoming climate change summit.
  • The Mexican president’s plan, which he said will be presented to President Biden on April 22, is expected to allow 1 million immigrants to be licensed to work in sectors that U.S. employers require.
  • Obrador said that if approved, it would be a way to help the serious migratory crisis that the U.S. is presenting, and thus strengthen the ties that both countries have, however he said that if the work visa is allowed, it would later allow them citizenship.
  • An editor of Mexico Today, Jose Diaz Briceño said that Obrador “opted to change the subject and is now expected to present Biden with an immigration ‘agreement’ for Central Americans to gain access to U.S. citizenship in exchange for planting trees”.
  • It should be noted that Mexico’s participation in the summit, unlike those of the large industrialized countries, does not carry much weight, but the president sees the opportunity to raise other important issues.
  • For now such proposals seek to allow Mexicans to get jobs mostly in rural areas, however the L-1 and TN visa programs have allowed foreigners to opt for administrative jobs.
  • This has affected U.S. citizens’ ability to apply for jobs when they graduate from college, and since Biden took office the numbers have not been positive.
  • The current pressure on Biden is the policies he had planned to implement since he was a candidate, including the opening of the border and programs that benefit foreigners.
