- (General Dispatch) – In Sweden there is a law that allows child sex abusers to keep sexual content of their acts even though the authorities have confiscated their devices.
- A man who had raped a 14-year-old girl had taken several photos which he saved in the cloud, served his sentence and now returned to threaten the minor with making the photos public on the networks.
- Legal experts said that there is a legal loophole in the law, where authorities cannot access people’s accounts or emails; they can only deal with information that is in the retained devices.
- The information that is in the cloud is stored in a completely different place, for this reason it has called for a reform of the law so that such situations are over and not continue to favor sexual predators.
- Anders Ahlqvist, former operations specialist at the police’s national computer crime center said “Nowadays, it is so common to have data somewhere else than on your own machine, so from this point of view, the legislation is absolutely outdated”.
- Prosecutor Emelie Källfelt said in a radio interview that the law must be changed because when prosecuting rapists, they lack sufficient evidence to apply a sentence commensurate with the crimes committed.
- Emelie said that for now the victims are the ones who are suffering the most, as these predators may have caused more rapes, and the authorities are limited in accessing their e-mails and cannot identify the rest of the abused children.
- The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention said that as of 2020 the number of child rape cases has increased with more than 3500 cases, being one of the biggest crimes committed in Sweden.
