Suez Canal Still Blocked by Large Vessel Ever Given

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – The Suez Canal will require heavy machinery after the cargo ship Ever Given was left blocking the passage in both directions, generating traffic of more than 200 ships.
  • Breitbart News media said that apart from heavy machinery dredgers and tugboats will be needed to speed up the work, the shipment has been impossible to mobilize as it has deadweight of 199,000.
  • Lloyd`s List media outlet “Given that the Suez Canal will remain blocked for at least another day or two, shipping lines are forced to face the specter of taking the much longer route around the Cape of Good Hope to reach Europe or the east coast of North America,”
  • The big problem facing the other vessels is the increased costs in transporting the goods, as taking another route for some can cost them up to 12 days to reach their destination.
  • Operators are fighting day and night to free the vessel as soon as possible, attributing that the vessel was stuck due to weather problems since it tried to enter the canal through the Red Sea.
  • Rose George, a shipping expert, does not believe the report issued by Evergreen Marine Corp. About “weather problems,” she said it is due to human error, perhaps the operator was not experienced enough to cross the canal.
  • Rose said that this blockade will cause products to have an increase for consumers, one of the sectors that were supposed to be affected was the transportation of oil, but with the third wave of contagions in Europe, prices did not have a noticeable change.
  • It is estimated that this blockade between Asia and Europe is generating a loss of $9.6 billion, it is expected that the ship will be released as soon as possible.
