China Continues to Increase its Carbon Emissions

  • By Steph. G. Halston.
  • (General Dispatch) –  Ember, a non-profit organization, issued a report on the use of coal in China, which has generated 53% of its energy from coal regardless of the consequences.
  • China has been one of the world’s largest consumers of energy and has breached agreements by accelerating global pollution through the construction of coal-fired power plants in order to meet energy needs.
  • The media Reuters reported that China has had a 9% increase in carbon dioxide emissions despite the fact that in several countries they have decreased due to the closure of several companies as a result of the coronavirus.
  • The Asian country had promised to make a big change to use renewable energy to help the planet, since decades ago it promised to reach carbon neutrality, something that was not fulfilled.
  • Now it has again pledged to reduce its dependence on coal and bring climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions to a peak by 2030 and become “carbon neutral” by 2060.
  • China’s vast expansionism has not allowed renewables to meet the huge demand, so they have preferred to stick with coal despite the damage it does to the environment.
  • It is predicted that in the short term China will generate 5 times more energy through coal, according to Reuters reported that Greenpeace announced that in 2020 a project to generate 46.1 gigawatts was signed.
  • Ember’s organization advised that “Despite the record drop in coal during the pandemic, it still fell short of what is needed. Coal-fired power must collapse by 80% by 2030 to avoid dangerous levels of warming above 1.5°C. We need to generate enough clean electricity to simultaneously replace coal and electrify the global economy. World leaders have yet to realize the enormity of the challenge.”
