- (General Dispatch) – 9 Syrian immigrants were detained by airport authorities in Athens after attempting to travel to Vienna, posing as a volleyball team.
- According to Greek media outlet Proto Thema reported that the nine men presented a suspicious attitude at the airport, so the authorities asked for their documents.
- Proto Thema claimed that the immigrants’ passports were forged, which led to them being arrested and placed at the disposal of the immigration department for deportation.
- Giorgos Kalliakmanis, president of the South-East Attica Police Officers Association said that efforts to prevent illegal entry have increased after a large number of people have used forged documents.
- However, air transport is the least common way to enter Europe illegally, as the most commonly used routes are usually by land and by sea, which are usually in conflict.
- The Civil Liberties Union for Europe imposed a measure for airlines to be fined in case of transporting people with forged documents; the penalty ranges from € 5000 to € 500,000 Euros.
- For years, mafias in Turkey have been making a lot of money by offering fake passports and visas through the networks to find people willing to pay € 9,000 for Europe or € 11,000 for Great Britain.
- On the other hand, one of the ways in which migrants seek to extend the deportation process has been to discard the documents to try to apply for the asylum program, but most cases end up being transferred to their country of origin.
