Russian Army Returns to Base After Momentarily Occupying Crimea

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – The Russian army has returned to its bases after the massive military displacement ordered by the Kremlin on the Ukrainian border, despite rising tensions with Western countries.
  • The Chief of the Army General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov, informed that the displacement consisted of 300,000 soldiers, 35,000 vehicles, 900 aircraft and 180 navy ships, but that all the equipment returned to the country.
  • The Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, had ordered the withdrawal of the troops last week, but said that they had done so because they had fulfilled the objectives of the drill.
  • Although Western countries had shown their concern about Russia’s large military action, they only asked Vladimir Putin to withdraw the troops and thus avoid an escalation of tensions.
  • Russia’s conflict with Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014, where the Kremlin annexed the Crimean peninsula to the country, since then it has supported the rebel separatists, generating more than 14000 deaths over 7 years in eastern Donbas.
  • Different media predicted that Russia’s military displacement was aimed at a massive invasion of Ukraine, but other analysts said it was a way to make Russia’s military strength known to Western countries.
  • The Russian government threatened President Volodymir Zelenski not to attempt any maneuver in order to regain the peninsula, as they would act immediately without any dialogue.
