China Enters a New Wave of Covid in its Borderland

  • By James Kravitz
  • (General Dispatch) –    China has once again fallen victim to covid-19 after authorities announced they had won the battle against the virus, new cases have appeared on the Myanmar border.
  • Hong Kong’s Apple Daily media reported that 29 cases of coronavirus have appeared in the province, with most being asymptomatic and almost half of the people coming from Myanmar.
  • Authorities detected the spread of the strain after testing the inhabitants of Ruili, following which they applied severe restrictions, closing shops and leaving only basic necessities open.
  • The residents of Ruili were asked to stay in their homes until the authorities make a further pronouncement, in order to avoid an accelerated increase in the spread of the virus.
  • Such a measure caused residents to express concern about a possible shortage of food at home, and authorities have even arrested some locals for picking fights in supermarkets.
  • However, the Chinese government ordered to reinforce security at the border to prevent illegal crossings, and recruited workers from the community to work with the authorities.
  • It is speculated that the increase in illegal crossings has increased due to the political chaos in Myanmar following a coup d’état in February, generating constant demonstrations.
