Russia Creates Coronavirus Vaccine for Pets

  • By Wayne Rodrigo
  • (General Dispatch) Russia’s federal veterinary service, Rosselkhoznadzor, has succeeded in developing the first vaccine against coronavirus for domestic animals, which has been approved for use.
  • Rosselkhoznadzor deputy director Konstantin Savenkov announced on March 30 the registration in Russia of the first product against covid-19 in animals to prevent possible spread from animals to humans.
  • Clinical studies of the Carnivak-Cov vaccine began in October last year with dogs, cats, foxes and other animals, and Savenkov said that the results obtained have been effective, achieving a 100% efficiency rate.
  • It is assumed that the efficacy rate is maintained over a period of 6 months, although it is still being investigated whether it is maintained for more months, without the need for a second dose to be required.
  • “Russian scientists believe that the use of the vaccine can prevent the virus from mutating, which most often occurs during interspecies transmission,” Rosselkhoznadzor said.
  • Russia’s initiative is to provide the vaccine to animal husbandry companies in Greece, Poland, and Austria, however there are other nations that have shown interest in acquiring it such as the US, Canada, and Singapore.
  • Although research has been conducted on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 from animals to humans, it has not been of great concern to the international community, which has focused most of its efforts on human-to-human infection.
  • However, Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, late last year ordered the culling of 17 million minks because of a possible mutation of the virus; Mette said the measure was necessary to avoid any evolution of the virus that could further affect human health.
