San Francisco School Names to Stay Despite Racist Accusations

  • By Steph. G. Halston
  • (General Dispatch) –  According to media reports, the San Francisco school board will not make any changes for now to various institutions after being labeled as racist.
  • Although representatives had hoped that the modifications would be made, the board preferred to prolong and put the issue aside while prioritizing the classes even though they are in a pandemic.
  • Democratic Mayor London Breed has strongly supported the school board’s decision, and said that for now it is not an issue that warrants the changes to be made at least in the short term.
  • “In the midst of this once-in-a-century challenge, to hear that the District is focusing energy and resources on renaming schools, schools that haven’t even opened, is offensive,” Democrat Breed said with some annoyance.
  • State Senator Scott Wiener said he supports the change, but for now it is not a priority. He also regretted that when the names were imposed, they did not take into account how it could affect the community.
  • According to the Angeles Times, he said that the school board will establish the measures to be adopted to change the names of the institutions in the future, but did not set any date.
  • Even the representatives have shown concern, as they suspect that the school board is trying to stop the decision, and warned that if the demands are not met, they will file a lawsuit in conjunction with various associations.
  • They argue that the decision to name the institutions was made without taking into account the opinion of the community, being imposed arbitrarily and in violation of California law.
