UN Proposes that High Net Worth Individuals pay more Taxes to help Economies Recover From the Covid Crisis

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations, has proposed a project that will allow the world to recover from the coronavirus, through the application of taxes on large estates.
  • The aim is to finance the economic and social crisis generated by covid-19, and he also made several criticisms of the great leaders, who have not assumed or proposed a real solution.
  • At the 2021 Economic and Social Council Forum, Guterres said that in the face of this crisis, the rich made a profit of $5 trillion last year, and a large part of the population has become even poorer.
  • Through this project, an equitable redistribution of wealth is expected, but this idea should be put to a vote, and major countries should debate as the international community has faced economic problems.
  • Guterres called on governments to “consider a solidarity or wealth tax on those who have benefited during the pandemic, to reduce extreme inequalities”.
  • On the other hand, he said that all countries have not agreed on a way out of the crisis, around 120 million people have been infected with the virus and the world economy has fallen into one of the most severe recessions.
  • In his statement he warned that only 10 countries have managed to benefit from 75% of the vaccines, a bureaucratic way, leaving the others excluded, at least to try to get vaccines to health personnel.
  • It is expected that by 2021 poverty will increase dramatically, and the account of billionaires will rise to $8 trillion increasing economic inequality on the planet.
