- (General Dispatch) – Cornell University has implemented a new measure where campus police officers should no longer request a description of students who are presumed to have a record.
- Previously, when police officers requested the description of suspects, such information was sent via email, but usually targeted the African-American community who were at the top of the list for investigation.
- According to the resolution implemented, it will prevent law enforcement authorities from presuming that a black man has committed a crime without having any evidence to support it.
- The university said that such presumptions put black people in the community at risk, reinforcing the common phenomenon of violence against black people on the grounds that they look like suspected criminals.
- The emails classify unequally, as it selects suspected suspects by characteristics, prioritizing race and gender.
- The e-mails contribute to police forces acting unequally against people of African descent, being totally disproportionate and violent, because they have in mind a stereotype of criminals.
- Although a statistical study revealed that 75% of the mails investigated by the authorities were from the black community, the system designated as “Crime Alert” is the one that keeps track.
- “Vaguely saying that a black man has dark skin, or superfluously reporting that a black man has black hair, argues to us that unexamined cultural work is being done through these emails” says the report issued by the university.
