U.S. Postal Service Implements a Covert Program Called iCOP

  • (General Dispatch) – The “Covert Internet Operations Program” that the USPS began to implement consists of collecting and tracking all those publications made by users on social networks.
  • This information was made known through a report published by Yahoo News, saying that the postal service has quietly implemented this program.
  • Although details have not been given in full, it is intended for different analysts to identify those publications that may be generators of violence.
  • The government came to pronounce on March 16 about this measure as “sensitive”, however analysts have revealed places and times where different people came to agree on the protests that were generated on March 20.
  • The report that was presented stated that a large-scale plan of protests was being generated in different cities around the world taking as a main theme freedom and democracy, among other issues.
  • The analysts managed to take images of the publications in different media. “iCOP are monitoring social media channels for potential threats stemming from the planned protests and will disseminate intelligence updates as needed.”
  • Rachel Levinson-Waldman, deputy director of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty and National Security Program, said she finds it suspicious that the Postal Service should be involved over assessing content uploaded to social networks.
