- (General Dispatch) – North Dakota lawmakers enacted legislation that will prevent state universities from providing financial resources to contract for abortions.
- The legislation curtails a long-standing sex education program that universities would have entered into with Planned Parenthood.
- At the same time, the legislative measure blocks federal resources to South Dakota’s major state colleges.
- As such, the law will penalize all universities in the state that enter into a contract with organizations or individuals engaged in the practice and promotion of abortion.
- Evidently, the set of rules also contemplates custodial measures for those who, after the official enactment, transgress the legislative mechanisms.
- On the contrary, NDSU members qualify the legislators’ actions as violations of their academic rights.
- In this vein, the legislators urge universities to formulate educational mechanisms that foster a culture of preventing unwanted pregnancies.
- Despite opposition, the legislation will soon begin to regulate the areas within its purview, which will ultimately no longer provide monetary resources for such purposes.
