Kamala Harris Proposes Border Tree Planting as a Response to Immigration

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) – Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States, has scheduled a meeting on May 7 with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
  • One of the main topics to be discussed is the great problem that the US is going through, with the large number of immigrants trying to cross the border daily, in addition to the increase in insecurity.
  • It seems that one of Obrador’s innovative plans is to offer Kamala Harris, a solution to climate change, that Biden can provide citizenship to immigrants in exchange for a job by planting trees in Mexico.
  • Aside from combating extreme poverty, the New York Post said, “The idea is to plant a billion fruit and timber trees, and Lopez Obrador proposed that the United States grant six-month work visas leading to citizenship to workers who participate in the program”
  • However, the Mexican president has asked for financial assistance from the U.S., for this project to be carried out, according to economists who predict that this project is worth $3 billion.
  • Obrador said that if Biden assumes the negotiation, it would generate around 1.2 million jobs in Central America and thus help the families of the workers to have a better quality of life.
  • However, even if different guidelines are given with positive results, this project must be evaluated since there is a high risk that the funds will be diverted and the desired objectives will not be achieved.
  • For now, this has been one of the measures planned to reduce the number of immigrants who choose to go to the U.S., regardless of the risk they may suffer during the crossing.
