- (General Dispatch) – U.S. President Joe Biden is planning to ban menthol cigarettes; the decision comes over the refusal of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) movement.
- In the first instance, the movement had warned President Biden that the decision will unleash “serious racial justice implications” for people of African descent and further controversy with local law enforcement.
- It is important to note that the decision would be a setback for the criminal justice system, after having achieved so much success.
- At the same time, the corporations that produce menthol cigarettes have for years been responsible for supplying the demand for tobacco in the Afro-descendant population.
- For this reason, the White House policy would be encouraging racial discrimination, by depriving people who use tobacco from consuming it, which does not represent any illicit act.
- According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, more than 20,000 Americans smoke menthol cigarettes.
- Next, President Joe Biden also aims to create legislation that would force tobacco companies to reduce the level of nicotine in cigarettes.
- However, Biden’s proposal has not yet been approved, and the course to be taken will continue in the next few days, when the public will ultimately know whether or not the legislation will be passed.
