Immigrant Minors Exceed Shelter Capacity in the U.S.

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) –  The Biden administration has had to deal with problems at the border, a large number of immigrant children without their representative have been detained by the border patrol, where the number of captured children has risen sharply.
  • According to a CBS report, in the month of February alone, the shelters have received more than 7000 children, as opposed to the year 2019 which was only 5000, complicating the border situation in the face of a health crisis, making the procedures take even longer.
  • The first quarter of 2021 has been chaotic for the Biden administration; they have even issued an order where only the White House will be the spokesperson on any kind of information on the border.
  • CBS has done comparisons of numbers from 2019, when HHS had captured and moved about 5900 children, and just at the beginning of March 2020 1500 have been captured so far this month.
  • Then a report is issued where it was requested that the shelters should be expanded to avoid overcrowding. It also stated that the shelters needed to be upgraded to deal with COVID 19.
  • Yet Biden has received criticism, because “Migrant children often arrive with a grandparent, older sibling or other relative, but are separated until federal officials can confirm that the accompanying adult is their relative, as required by U.S. law,” USA Today said.
  • When detained, they must serve 72 hours or more in a facility designated for minors and held by the Border Patrol while the case is investigated.
