- (General Dispatch) – According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in early April, they have shown that the percentage of transmission through surfaces is minimal.
- The study shows that the most relevant route of contamination is through the secretions of an infected person, since sneezing or coughing can directly spread the virus to a healthy person.
- However, the study shows that if contaminated secretions are touched on a surface by a healthy person, the percentage of risk of contracting the virus is probably low.
- According to figures the probability of contamination through a contaminated surface is 1 in 10000 people, however they urge people to maintain biosecurity measures, e.g. constant hand washing.
- “Because of the many factors affecting the efficiency of environmental transmission, the relative risk of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is considered low compared with direct contact, droplet transmission or airborne transmission,” the study states.
- Although research is still being conducted on the effectiveness rate of biosecurity measures, to what extent they can prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission, despite the fact that there are different routes of infection the most successful has been direct contact.
- Although the study does not give a clear conclusion on whether the use of detergents is necessary for outdoor disinfection, it explains that “preventing secondary transmission of SARS-CoV-2 between an infected person and other people within households can have an influence”.
