Child Prostitution in France Increased by 600 Percent in The Last Years

  • (General Dispatch) – The French Central Office for the Suppression of Human Trafficking (OCRTEH) reported that the number of children exploited and sold by sex traffickers increased by 600 percent between 2014 and 2020. 
  • The agency detailed that in 2014 the number of children exploited and sold was 28, but by 2020 the figure had risen to 198, representing an alarming increase of 600 percent in just six years. 
  • One of the cities in the country with the highest vulnerability rates is Lille, Earlier this month, the city saw the latest case involving two young men involved in a sex trafficking network that included children, so prosecutor Carole Étienne urged the authorities to be vigilant. 
  • “In 2020, of the pimping cases we had to deal with, there were 33 victims and 22 were minors. It’s a wake-up call I want to push.” Prosecutor Carole Étienne said
  • “They are often vulnerable, struggling people between the ages of 14 and 17, on the run. We see a trivialisation of pimping and prostitution among young people, to finance a lifestyle.” Etienne finished
  • One of the most heinous cases to come to light in France was that of a judge in the city of Dijon, who prostituted his 12-year-old daughter through a website. 
  • Also in 2019, a study conducted by the Observatory against violence against women found that in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, one third of prostitutes were under 15 years of age.
  • The fight against child sex trafficking is expected to be intensified by the French government as the figures are expected to be higher than those that have been collected.
