European Union Requires Repair of Household Appliances for Greater Durability

  • By Wayne Rodrigo
  • (General Dispatch) – The EU has promoted a law that every company that sells household appliances (televisions, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators) must guarantee their repair so that their useful life is extended by at least 10 years, all this in view of the increase in electrical waste.
  • The law will be promoted in 27 nations, in order to preserve the environment and reduce consumption.
  • Companies will have to continue producing parts so that these appliances can be repaired, many citizens have complained that they have had the intention but it is complicated because they do not get the parts.
  • Other companies accepted but will have to transfer the appliances to specialized centers to be able to carry out a quality repair.
  • The EU requires that the manuals must also specify how they can be repaired, and that the type of materials used in their manufacture can be recyclable.
  • According to a study, Europeans produce 20 kilograms of waste per person, of which only 40% can be recycled; the rest remains environmentally hazardous waste.
  • Svenja Schulze, German Minister of the Environment, gives the option that companies should indicate the useful life of the product, and if it decomposes before that time, they should be responsible for repairing it.
  • Many environmentalists have pointed out that lately the market offers a wide range of products, but the shelf life is getting shorter and shorter, so they are calling for quality products with a longer service life.
