- (General Dispatch) – 15 African migrants who were trying to reach Italy lost their lives in a boat which capsized in the Strait of Sicily, so far the coast guard saved 95 survivors, who were taken back to the African coasts.
- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is still looking for more survivors, apparently the rubber dinghy was carrying about 125 undocumented migrants, for now they have been given the necessary medical attention as they were suffering from hypothermia, dehydration and burns.
- The IOM clarifies that it is surprised how nothing has been said about these immigration situations, there is a silence about these issues and no measures or solutions have been provided.
- IOM spokesperson Safa Mhsehli made a statement through different tweets, raising a complaint about the action of both European and Libyan coast guards of Zawiya.
- Mhsehli said “As usual, the European and Libyan authorities prefer to let people die at sea than to bring them to Europe. We demand immediate help for the 125 people”.
- After this event a representative of the Lega party of Italy Matteo Salvini said that lately the number of migrants has increased exponentially, he said through a tweet “Landings and illegal immigration generate problems. I believe that with Draghi we will be in harmony, the borders of Italy are the borders of Europe”.
- Salvini attributes these deaths to the measures that are being adopted, the fact of having the ports open, allows mafias to take advantage of human trafficking and continue to increase the number of immigrants.
