New Zealand’s Biggest City Returns To Lockdown

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern ordered a lockdown in the city of Auckland after the first three cases of coronavirus appeared on Sunday after six months without cases in the nation.
  • The city returned to a level three lockdown, where schools and non-essential businesses will not be able to open their doors. The city will also be closed to out-of-town visitors for three days and the entire country has been raised to a level two alert.
  • “The main thing we are asking people in Auckland to do is stay at home to avoid any risk of spread, just in case it could be one of the more transmissible strains of Covid that we need to act with a high degree of caution around.” Ardern said
  • In August of last year, the city had to return to a two-week lockdown after detecting cases in travelers, but the country has enjoyed months of flexibility.
  • The infected were three members of a family in Auckland, so the authorities were quickly alerted as there was no clear source of infection.
  • To date, no cases have been reported in the country of the new variants of the virus that have spread in different parts of the world.
  • For its part, New Zealand has been one of the most praised countries for the great management of the pandemic, which has been so efficient that it has given months of total freedom to its inhabitants when other countries were at their critical point.
  • Ardern added that the nation’s borders will remain closed as long as the pandemic continues to ravage the planet.
