Russian Government Blames Google for Web Problems

  • (General Dispatch) – The Russian community has complained about problems with accessing different websites, such as google and youtube, as well as accessing pages of different governmental institutions.
  • Russia’s Digital Ministry attributed this problem to the major internet provider Rostelecom who presented problems in its infrastructure, affecting the internet speed and the access to different websites.
  • According to the ministry sent a message via twitter “Problems with access to various government and other sites are associated with the malfunction of routers used in the network of PJSC Rostelecom,” the ministry said.
  • Another information source said that on the same day there was a fire at a data center in Strasbourg, France, which made access to YouTube and Google specifically complicated.
  • The Kremlin announced that it will reduce the loading speed for twitter after displaying inappropriate content. The social network said it “failed to remove more than 3,000 tweets containing calls for minors to commit suicide, child pornography and drugs since 2017,” according to Moscow Times.
  • The Russian government will implement measures those social networks that do not abide by the rule to censor all inappropriate content that has been displayed on both twitter and google, in addition to not limiting propaganda that defended the opposition Alexei Navalny.
  • Groups supporting the opponent Navalny have made extensive use of social networks in order to incite young people to join such protests.
  • The Kremlin will continue to investigate other social networks for disseminating information that could lead to violent acts against Putin’s government.
