Koo the Indian government’s new counterpart to Twitter

  • (General Dispatch) – After Twitter suspended around 500 Indian accounts last week, including news portals and activists against the Indian government, it decided after 12 hours to reverse its decision and restore access to the accounts.
  • This did not go down well with the Indian government, and since February 9, rumors have been swirling about the possibility, which is now a reality, of the creation of Twitter’s new Indian rival, Koo.
  • The new app seems to be being well received especially by government supporters, several ministers and personalities have already created their account on Koo to give it the necessary boost within the population.
  • On the other hand Twitter said it decided not to comply with all of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology blocking orders “because we do not believe that the actions we have been directed to take are consistent with Indian law,”
  • “[I]n keeping with our principles of defending protected speech and freedom of expression, we have not taken any action on accounts that consist of news media entities, journalists, activists, and politicians.” Twitter added in a blog post
  • It should be recalled that since November last year, hundreds of farmers decided to take to the streets of the Indian capital in protest against the new political reforms that they claim are an attack on Indian tradition.
  • On January 26, the protests became more aggressive when farmers decided to march in defiance of the government on organized routes, where hundreds of civilians and police were injured.
  • For now the only certainties are that Koo is already a reality and that the protests and discontent of Indian farmers continues.
