Ecuador’s New Right-Wing President Aims to move the Country Away from Hemispheric Socialism

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) –  Guillermo Lasso won the presidential elections on Sunday in Ecuador, defeating his socialist opponent Andres Arauz.
  • It should be noted that previous mandates in Ecuador were influenced by the dictatorships of Cuba and Venezuela, apart from committing countless human rights crimes.
  • In 2017 former President Moreno made a drastic change by positioning himself against Correa and revealing the amount of crimes he committed, enacting different conservative laws, among them the disqualification of former President Correa to run again.
  • Correa tried to influence Arauz’s candidacy from Belgium where he is a fugitive from justice to avoid an 8-year sentence after he was accused of having links with Marxist mafias.
  • According to media reports Lasso won with 52.46 percent against 47.54 percent obtained by Arauz, after the results were announced Lasso’s supporters celebrated his victory on Sunday.
  • Lasso said that one of the reasons that gave him the victory, is the support given to him by citizens after announcing his anti-socialist project, and thanked the people to get out of power that kept affecting the nation for 14 years.
  • “We will work with decision so that the 17 million Ecuadorians benefit from the change of a democratic, free, prosperous country, a country of freedom, a country where no one is afraid. Tonight we can all sleep calmly and in peace”, said Lasso.
  • One of the great challenges for President Lasso is to rebuild the economic destruction left by the restrictions of the coronavirus and Moreno’s policies, apart from the fact that there are still part of the population that are socialist supporters.
