  • By Joergen Haisem
  • (General Dispatch) – Facial recognition technology in Moscow has helped capture around 900 wanted persons; the software is based on a comparison of faces without revealing any personal information.
  • Metro security Chief Andrei Kichigin insisted that “It only verifies wanted persons, if a person is in the law enforcement database. If they are not there, there is nothing to compare with.”
  • In September 2020 Deputy Mayor of Moscow, Maxim Liksutov stated that security turnstiles will be installed in the metro where payment will be made through facial recognition.
  • Liksutov stated that for this type of scheme to work, a large amount of information will have to be collected from citizens and not just a list of offenders. This will begin to take effect in the spring of this year.
  • According to a statement Open Medida, Moscow since 2017 has sought to collect information on its citizens, tailoring profiles according to gender, age and income level. This was one of the biggest investments the government has made to develop the software.
  • Many Russian citizens are wondering how reliable the security the government can provide with the large data collection which according to is in order to be able to create a “social credit system” similar to the Chinese regime.
  • Social credit systems can be counterproductive, in the hands of authoritarian governments; they can give citizens more access to certain services as well as limit them.
  • Chinese Communism has been heavily criticized for using this type of “social credit system” in addition to monitoring citizens, as it ranks them through scores to see who are the candidates that should have more benefits.
