  • By Wayne Rodrigo
  • (General Dispatch) – Russian state media TASS reported that a bill was passed in the lower house of the Russian parliament that would amend the constitution to allow President Putin to be re-elected until 2036.
  • The bill was introduced on March 24 and said “presidential term limits apply to the incumbent head of state regardless of his previous terms and thus the president will be able to run for power for a fifth time.”
  • Still the bill will have to be evaluated by the upper house of parliament for approval, and thus subsequently signed by President Putin to become law.
  • Vladimir Putin has been an important political figure in the Kremlin for more than two decades, serving either as a minister or as President for two consecutive terms.
  • The lower house of parliament made other modifications where Russian citizens in order to run for the Russian presidency must be at least 30 years old, among other requirements.
  • According to TASS media outlet said “The document also clarifies the law on parliamentary elections and prohibits persons convicted of low/middle-level felonies from running for parliament for five years after they have served their sentence or have been acquitted of their criminal record.”
  • President Vladimir Putin had proposed this project at the beginning of 2020 and was consulted with citizens in July, the majority of whom approved the decision to amend 206 constitutional amendments.
  • The political powers in the Kremlin have emphasized that they prefer Putin to remain in office, another of the amendments that empowered him in the public consultation was to impose that same-sex marriages would not be allowed, an issue that has generated debate among the “social equality”.
