Indian Crematoriums collapse due to Covid-19 Death toll

  • By Anton Grillo
  • (General Dispatch) – Media in the state of Gujurat, in western India, have reported that the furnaces are beginning to fail due to the large number of bodies being brought in.
  • Since the pandemic was announced, the ovens have been operating without any interruption, 24 hours a day, the managers have reported that the metal parts have begun to melt.
  • “Sailor Kurukshetra crematorium and a second crematorium [in Surat] known as Umra have cremated more than 100 bodies per day under COVID protocols over the past week, well above the city’s official daily COVID death toll of around 25,” reported media outlet Reuters last week.
  • Rashant Kabrawala, a trustee of Narayan Trust in charge of managing another crematorium facility, preferred not to disclose details about the intake of bodies, but claimed it has tripled in recent weeks.
  • Rashant has been amazed at the number of bodies coming in, and said it is incomparable with other types of diseases such as the bubonic plague in 1994 or those caused by natural disasters.
  • Now a debate has arisen because the data offered by the government about the mortality rate does not match the large number of crematory admissions.
  • A clear example is when the media India Today reported a comparison of two cremation centers in the city of Bhopal, where in one cremation center 187 bodies were admitted and in the other one only 4 bodies were reported, tracking from 4 consecutive days last week.
  • The government, in an attempt to defend itself, assumed that there are also cases where it is not known if the cause of death was due to the virus and reported that “In many cases, patients arrive at the hospital in an extremely critical condition and die before being evaluated, and there are cases where patients are brought dead to the hospital and we do not know if they are positive or not”.
