France Votes on Islamism Crackdown

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) – The lower house of the French parliament will be voting on a law allowing stricter surveillance of mosques and religious schools, a law that also intends to remove polygamy and marriage and any radicalism of Islamism.
  • This law is promoted by President Emmanuel Macron, after the occurrence of several situations involving Islamic extremists, one of the turning points was the beheading of French teachers where a wave of repudiation was not long in coming.
  • The bill is expected to win approval in the National Assembly, which is dominated by Macron’s centrist party, as well as the conservative-led Senate.
  • Macron also assures that this law will ensure equal rights for all residents of the country, as well as safeguard fundamental French traditions over any kind of radicalism.
  • The reactions of radicals have not been long in coming, assuring that this law is an attack on individual rights of freedom with which they intend to persecute people for believing in something different.
  • Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan invited his French counterpart to undergo a mental check-up for what he calls a blatant persecution of Muslims and Islamists.
  • Many French Muslims have spoken out against the proposal because they claim it limits religious freedom, and adds to a long line of anti-terrorist laws against them.
  • Despite the criticism, President Macro maintains his decision to promote this law. With elections on the horizon it seems to be a smart move to attract conservative votes to his side.
