Use of Facial Coverings Could Be a thing of the Past in Switzerland

  • By William Silgueiro
  • (General Dispatch) – A proposal introduced in Switzerland seeks to stop the wearing of face coverings on both niqabs and burqas, which are worn by Muslim women, along with the headscarves and balaclavas worn by some protesters.
  • This Sunday, Swiss voters attended an Election Day election seeking approval of the proposal.
  • The legislation contemplates the prohibition of having to wear the facial covering in public places such as: commercial establishments, streets, parks, among others, except for religious infrastructures, and of course as a security measure the mandatory use of a face mask.
  • For its part, the government was quick to oppose the measure, expressing that this is an insult, and that it disrupts tourism in the region, as it is part of years of culture.
  • Supporters of the proposal argued that this is a great achievement, since the use of the cover only represses women and violates their right to show themselves freely as they are.
  • Almost two hours after the closing of the voting centers, the results showed a 52% support for the proposal. A very close race.
  • A remarkable change can be glimpsed in the nation, as the roots sown by the culture intend to take a step towards a new era. Where the position of women is focused on empowerment.
  • Undoubtedly, a great achievement for a population that for years remained positioned in restrictions for women. This event highlights the day in which the importance of women is commemorated.
