U.S. Electronics Companies Prefer to Hire Foreigners

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Representative Paul Gosar said that large technology companies prefer to hire foreign workers rather than U.S. workers because their labor is cheaper.
  • Gosar says that visa programs do not bring good results and emphasized the Optional Practical Training (OPT), through which technology companies profit from the discounts given to them.
  •  Gosar in 2019 introduced a bill titled “Highly Skilled Americans Fairness Act” that would allow Americans to be considered for potential jobs and rule out OPT.
  • “This is a careless intrusion of foreign workers providing benefits to people like big tech to bring in people from China, Pakistan and India, and one of the problems here is that you get a 15.5 percent discount for hiring over U.S. citizens,” Gosar said.
  • The OPT program offers a tax benefit that is paid by U.S. citizens for large technology companies to hire foreign students. According to him, about 500,000 foreigners have managed to get administrative jobs in different companies.
  •  Amazon, Google, Deloitte and Intel prefer to hire OPT students instead of U.S. citizens, and through this they manage to avoid a great amount of money in taxes.
  • One study found that OPT students were opting for jobs in New York, New Jersey, California, Texas or another coastal state, leaving large corporations even more useful.
