Iran Wants to Increase Uranium Enrichment
- By James Kravitz
- (General Dispatch) – Following the recent power outage at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, the government has sought to increase uranium enrichment, which has raised suspicions in the international community.
- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stated that he will act in this way after blaming Israel as the main suspect in the attack as “terrorist”.
- Countries have raised concerns about the decisions being taken by Iran, as 60% purity of uranium enrichment may be the degree necessary for the creation of nuclear weapons.
- Rouhani said that although the IR-1 centrifuges were damaged by the attack they can easily be replaced by IR-6 centrifuges that can accelerate uranium enrichment.
- According to media reports that this attack on the facility delayed the country’s nuclear program by 9 months, it is assumed that Iran by taking this step is even closer to generating 90% pure uranium.
- Iran is totally disobeying the nuclear treaty that was made in 2015, where one of the clauses specified that only 3.67 percent uranium enrichment will be allowed.
- A former U.S. intelligence official told NBC News that such attacks on both the facility and the death of a leading scientist may be a strategy by the country to excuse itself and continue violating the nuclear treaty.
