Bill Gates suggests wealthy countries go for 100% synthetic beef but eats cheeseburgers often

By SUSAN AMPERS

  • (General Dispatch) — Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recommended the richest countries in the world to eat 100% synthetic beef, which he believes could have a significant impact on the planet, despite the fact that he loves to eat cheeseburgers.
  • The Microsoft founder said in an interview, “I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef. You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time.”
  • However, regardless of Gates encouraging the U.S. to go entirely for synthetic beef and upset a massive farming industry, he himself cannot avoid the taste of traditional beef.
  • In fact, the managing director of the Gates Foundation Joe Cerrell revealed Gates’s addiction to cheeseburgers. A meeting with him means cheeseburgers for lunch no matter where and who you are.
  • On the other hand, as Bill Gates makes an environmental impact and takes various green initiatives, he explained that eating 100% synthetic beef — plant-based and lab-grown meat products — would help reduce global carbon emissions.
  • The billionaire highlighted the effort that companies such as Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat have created with plant-based meats, telling the Technology Review that they “have a road map, a quality road map and a cost road map that makes them totally competitive.”
  • Nonetheless, Gates’s proposal is potential only for wealthy and developed nations. It excludes the poorest 80 countries in the world.
  • Furthermore, he explained that they have to use animal genetics to dramatically raise the amount of beef per emissions for them.
  • Gates added: “As for scale today, they don’t represent 1% of the meat in the world, but they’re on their way.”
