- (General Dispatch) – Joe Biden issued a federal disaster declaration for the state of Texas in response to severe weather conditions that forced residents to subsist for several days without power, food and water.
- It is expected that through the order, the federal government will be able to address the areas most affected by the severe winter in Texas, starting with state and local areas, with public assistance.
- Assistance that can be provided is financial help for home repairs, low-cost loans for those who were uninsured and enabling merchants to recover from the disaster.
- Federal funding will be available to state governments, local governments and certain private organizations to address statewide hazard reduction and protection measures.
- Governor Gregg Abbott is requesting individual assistance for all counties because only 77 of the 254 counties in Texas will be allowed access to federal aid, and this request was partially approved.
- “While this partial approval is an important first step, Texas will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure that all eligible Texans have access to the relief they need. The funds provided under the Major Disaster Declaration can provide crucial assistance to Texans as they begin to repair their homes and address property damage.” Abbott said.
- Water service continues to be one of the most affected due to broken pipes; food has also become a problem due to the fact that most stores have closed early due to the lack of supplies and the uncertainty of being able to restock.
- It is hoped that with the aid on its way, a large part of the problems will be solved, especially the basic necessities that are currently the ones that are most punishing Texans because they cannot access them.
