Study in Israel Claims Pfizer’s Vaccine is 85% Effective

  • By James Kravitz
  • (General Dispatch) – The first dose of Pfizer’s vaccine has been shown to be 85% effective and the second dose can be prolonged longer than previously specified, a conclusion reached in a groundbreaking study in Israel indicating that the results have been favorable.
  • According to the Sheba medical center’s study of 7,000 health care workers, there was a 75% reduction in infections in symptomatic persons within 15 to 28 days after the first dose of the vaccine was administered.
  • Taking into account asymptomatic cases and having these results is great news of its effectiveness Prof. Gili Regev-Yochay said the data were “very, very significant, in real life, we are seeing excellent results,” he said. “What we see is really very high effectiveness just two to four weeks after the first injection.”
  • The vaccine has an advantage in that it “supports the delay of the second dose in countries facing vaccine shortages and scarce resources, thus enabling greater population coverage with a single dose,” the study said.
  • Professor Arnon Afek said that this type of research will be useful unlike others because it will indicate to the Israeli government that with one dose they can immunize a large part of the population and have more time to apply the second dose.
  • Although the studies are encouraging, a strict follow-up should be carried out to know exactly how long the second dose can be prolonged and thus continue evaluating its effectiveness.
  • This research took place in an outbreak of Covid – 19 in Israel where hospitals collapsed, but research is still being carried out in other countries to obtain more data on its effectiveness.
  • Sheba’s medical study will be published in the medical journal the lancet, with the aim of informing the public and generating more safety in the population when applying the vaccine produced by the U.S. Company.
