Biden Returns Assets to Iran

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – The Biden administration through negotiations with Iran promised to unfreeze $7 billion of Iranian assets that were frozen in 2019, the South Korean foreign ministry announced.
  • The release of the assets will be completed when the countries involved are certain of the use to which Iran will put them. Although it has not been specified in what form the transfer of the assets will take place, Washington has been negotiating to give a portion of the assets.
  • South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the funds they release will be used to pay off some U.S. debts and the rest to purchase medicine and medical equipment from a Swiss organization.
  • Korea Times and other media outlets went so far as to speculate about an alleged Iranian hijacking of an oil tanker, but claimed that the release was carried out in order to free assets that were blocked.
  • One of the i24 media assumed such action as a seizure of the vessel by Iran; the Jerusalem Post reported that it was a victory for Iran for recovering the 7 billion, apart from snatching concessions from Europe and making attacks through Iraq and Yemen on Washington’s allies.
  • Other state media are aggressively targeting South Korea for its failure to release the funds earlier, blaming its policies and the fact that it is working in tandem with the US.
  • Abdolnaser Hemmati governor of Iran’s central bank argued “A year and a half ago, I had talks with South Korean officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy, on this issue, and they promised assistance and cooperation, which unfortunately were not fulfilled.”
  • So far South Korea may accede to the request to release the funds if it is for medical equipment, but it appears that Iranian intentions are contrary and they intend to fund terrorist groups and pursue their nuclear agenda of global intimidation.
