United States rejoins the UN

  • By Steph. G. Halston
  • (General Dispatch) – Joe Biden announces that the U.S. will rejoin the UN after leaving the organization under the Trump administration after he claimed it was not performing its duties efficiently.
  • Per a statement from US Secretary Anthony Blinken, the United States expects to rejoin the UN in early 2022 as an observer, according to Blinken since the US left the organization, authoritarian governments have benefited from such an absence.
  • We seek to return to the Human Rights Council to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies and partners to ensure that this important body fulfills its purpose. We do so with a determination to listen, learn and work for a world in which human rights are universally respected.” Blinken said.
  • The former Trump administration made the decision to pull out because of the pressure the organization puts on Israel to ignore totalitarian governments that violate rights day in and day out, such as Cuba, Venezuela, China and the Republic of Congo.
  • The former ambassador said in her statement on leaving the organization “We took this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain part of a hypocritical and selfish organization that makes a mockery of human rights.”
  • Joe Biden has been moving with the sole objective of canceling the policies of the former administration, so he seeks to retake the leadership of the U.N. by accentuating that he is doing it for the good of U.S. citizens.
  • Blinken stated that by joining the United States, the country will be able to present its point of view, conduct new negotiations and contribute its support to the resolutions adopted by the organization.
  • For the time being, this decision will have to wait, as the United States cannot vote until the 47-member council is formed. But it is expected that in 2022 the U.S. will once again have a seat at the UN.
