Facebook Implicated in Child Abuse Material Cases

  • By John Delorian
  • (General Dispatch) – Research by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children stated that the social network had 20.3 million incidents of child abuse material, representing 95% compared to other networks.
  • In other applications reflecting the same incident we find Google with 546,704, Twitter 65,062, Snapchat 144,095 and TikTok with 22,692 cases. Facebook came to represent the highest percentage even adding the cases of the other networks.
  • The Canadian-based pornography company (Mindgeek) came to report having fewer incidents than Facebook, even though they have the domain of Youporn, Redtube and Pornhub and only had 13,229 cases.
  • MindGeek had a conflict last year over a campaign that was created in order to shut down Pornhub called #Traffickinghub which blamed them for encouraging underage trafficking and smuggling.
  • Pornhub and Facebook in a statement refer to the amount of data is much smaller, the 13,229 is not the actual figure, most reports are usually sent repeatedly.
  • Facebook referred that the actual numbers of reports sent is 2,030,722. Stating that 90% of the rest are usually similar to previously sent content.
  • The company revamped its platform to prevent any type of activity that is intended to promote child sexual abuse, implementing tools on its network to help denounce people who engage in this action.
  • Facebook stated “Using our apps to harm children is abhorrent and unacceptable. Our industry-leading efforts to combat child exploitation focus on preventing abuse, detecting and reporting content that violates our policies, and working with experts and authorities to keep children safe.”
