TIK TOK Violates Users’ Rights

  • (General Dispatch) – The well-known application TIKTOK will have to pay $92 million for transferring user data to third parties including the Chinese government without any approval, the largest payment ever made in the history of social networks of this type.
  • TIK TOK has transferred U.S. users’ information to Chinese servers to identify them, track their location and the activities they engage in.
  • One of TIKTOK’s defense attorneys Katrina Carroll said “affected users will be compensated, tiktok will respect people’s security in the future” yet she referred to other social networks that appear harmless and may be disclosing people’s private data.
  • The result was 21 federal lawsuits where most of the affected users were minors, some as young as 6 years old. The company accepted its mistake and complied with the legal procedure without any problems.
  • Lawyers who were defending users allege that the company sought to pass more data in a clandestine manner that could be used to monitor people.
  • Investigators of the event announced that the company tried to hide the data transfer by attempting to modify the source code, which revealed their evil intentions.
  • For now it is not entirely clear whether the application will undergo a change in its policies or some kind of restriction after this situation has been affirmed.
  • The Trump administration had issued a statement restricting the use of the app as it claimed the app gave Americans’ personal data to China’s communist party.
