Gender Reassignment Surgery and Hormone Reassignment Surgery in Infants was put to Vote in the State of Alabama

  • By Ely Márquez
  • With 23 votes in favor and 4 against, legislators of the State of Alabama voted on the regulation that seeks to protect children from procedures with the use of hormones that affect the body, as well as gender reassignment.
  • The transgender community considers that gender identity is not due to a biological act, but to an individual’s own choice.
  • An important element to consider in this context is that children are not capable of making decisions about surgery or taking drugs at an early age.
  • The primary objective of the legislation is to protect children from any event or circumstance that puts their physical integrity at risk.
  •  According to several opinions gathered, the transgender community expressed that they were really offended with the approval of this law. Since it violates the right of each person to decide what he/she wants.
  • The decision taken, calls into question the mechanisms of law that empowers citizens to be people who should be treated with respect and dignity without being discriminated against.
  • What is really true is that the regulation seeks to ensure that the physical well-being of infants is in an optimal state, and is not altered by adverse circumstances that may trigger the application of surgeries and drugs in their full development.
  • Rather than representing an obstacle to the rights of citizens and their opportunity to choose, experts consider that the physical development of the infant is the priority.
