Israel Holds Iran Responsible for Oil Spill in Mediterranean Sea

  • (General Dispatch) – Statements by Israel’s environment minister said that Iran had carried out an oil spill off the Mediterranean coast, considering it an act of environmental terrorism. 
  • Considerable damage to various marine species was the result of the spill of a ship carrying oil from Iran. It caused the closure of all the beaches of Israel due to the spread of the crude oil along the coast.
  • Photographs were released in a statement indicating that the Emerald ship was carrying at least 12,000 tons of crude oil bound for Syria. 
  • The spill of the substance into the sea is a component that directly threatens the environment and the health of citizens, causing irreversible consequences in the ecosystem. 
  • Official sources have not yet confirmed that the act was intentionally provoked. However, there are indications to support this opinion.
  • The Lebanese parliament intends to file a complaint against Israel at the United Nations for the oil spill that also affected the country. 
  • There is no certainty about the event off the Israeli coast, but simply different types of claims between localities regarding the effects of the oil spill.  
  • In contrast to the different matrices of opinions about the actions carried out, control measures should be taken on the coasts of Israel to avoid an act of this nature again threatening the maritime life of the Mediterranean.
