Political Advertising Returns to Facebook

  • By Wayne Rodrigo
  • (General Dispatch) – The leader of social networks Facebook decided this week to lift the ordinance restricting the publication of political ads on the platform, after the elections held in November 2020.
  • The determination made by Facebook surprised many this Thursday, the news seems to be linked to the decision made by Google last week, since during the year 2020 both companies generated around 3,000 billion dollars from political spending.
  • As expressed by the Democratic digital advisor Annie Levene, the past months have been shockingly affected by the ban issued by the company, because it is an elemental channel to strengthen communication with voters.
  • Digital operators, both Democrats and Republicans expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision to censor political advertising.
  • One of the effects caused by the decision was the paralysis of resources coming from supporters who supported certain candidates through the platform.
  • This event caused a great disadvantage for those candidates who wished to make themselves known for the first time through this space.
  • Political leaders hope that Facebook will maintain its decision to allow them to generate the required publicity to be able to continue achieving their objectives.
  • In this sense, Facebook is considered an ideal platform for new political actors to create a career in the political context of the nation.
