Pentagon Warns of Rocket Attacks on Iraqi Base

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) -The Pentagon is on alert for rocket attacks on an Iraqi base where U.S. forces were stationed; even so they said they will not fall into provocations.
  • Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said that this type of situation is worrying but for now they will not act, at the site a U.S. contractor died of a heart attack who had sought refuge in the attack.
  • Iraqi authorities are investigating the perpetrators of the attack, and said they did not want another escalation in the conflict after being in negotiations.
  • The Biden administration has been in dispute with Iranian-backed Shiite rebel groups, which have already carried out three attacks on bases where U.S. contractors and troops are based.
  • On February 15 they received an attack with approximately 14 107mm rockets on the Erbil air base, wounding some Americans and killing a non-US contractor.
  • On February 22 they received another Green Zone attack in Baghdad, Iraq near the US embassy, but no deaths or injuries were reported.
  • Pressure was mounting on the Biden administration but they decided to refrain from any comment or action, opting instead to investigate with Iraqi authorities. For this reason, air strikes were then authorized in Syria where the attackers were presumed to be.
  • The attacks have continued, and the Biden administration has been criticized for having options to act and choosing not to take action because of the ongoing talks with the Iranian regime.
