Journalist Arrested for Spreading Information About Wuhan Outbreak

  • (General Dispatch) – Journalist Zhang Zhan was unjustly imprisoned months ago for reporting on the outbreak in Wuhan and as a form of protest she went on hunger strike.
  • She has been on hunger strike and has been force-fed through nasal tubes with her limbs immobilized for long periods of time, she told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
  • Zhang’s health has deteriorated sharply since she began her hunger strike, and at one hearing she had to appear in a wheelchair because she was unable to stand because of her weakened body.
  • According to Keke, a member of Zhang’s defense team, she was being forced to eat in prison through a feeding tube, causing nausea, headaches and prolonged dizziness.
  • Zhang made a long journey from Shanghai to the central city of Wuhan, making known the true situation being experienced by the COVID. He filmed and took a large number of photos of the patients and criticized online the CCP’s attempt to cover up the information.
  • Her actions made her famous on the networks and a large number of fans interacted with the journalist and subsequently caught the attention of the Chinese authorities, who arrested her and took her to prison in May 2020.
  • The CCP sentenced journalist Zhang to 4 years in prison for “disturbing and provoking trouble”. An EU representative said, “Ms. Zhang has been subjected to torture and ill-treatment during her detention and her state of health has seriously deteriorated. It is crucial that she receives adequate medical assistance.”
