- (General Dispatch) – U.S. President Joe Biden has decided to nominate former CIA director William Burns, who spent more than three decades in international relations on issues involving Russia and the Middle East, and who is alleged to have cooperated in various operations with the Chinese Communist Party.
- Republicans view Biden’s nomination with concern as he has demonstrated weakness on Chinese-related issues, a study by the RSC Republican Study Committee claims that Burns has had ties to China’s Communist Party.
- When Burns was president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace he even had discussions with a leading Chinese businessman named Zhang Yichen linked to two major organizations that are connected to the Chinese Communist Party.
- When Zhang’s firm was working in the U.S., it funded Carnegie with millions of dollars to build the Carnegie-Tsinghua headquarters in Beijing.
- Burns’ experience is mostly thanks to the state department, he participated in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal agreement with Iran with President Obama in charge, where they failed to stop Iran from turning its program into a nuclear threat.
- The Iran deal eventually met with approval until former president Trump cancelled it, Burns has been a vocal critic of trump’s policies and has strongly supported President Biden’s ideology.
- The current U.S. President stated “Ambassador Burns will bring the knowledge; judgment and perspective we need to prevent and address threats before they can reach our shores”.
- Burns’ nomination has been a controversial issue despite having a long track record; his actions have been questionable over time, so the mere fact of his claim to head the CIA creates unease and concern.
