Some Countries in Europe Suspend AstraZeneca Vaccine

  • By Joergen Haisem
  • (General Dispatch) – Several European Union countries have suspended use of the AstraZeneca vaccine after reports of apparent serious side effects of blood clotting.
  • Although the pharmaceutical company has spoken out against such allegations, they said that the vaccine has already immunized large numbers of people and such complications should not necessarily be attributed to the vaccine.
  • Jens Spahn, Germany’s health minister, banned the use of the vaccine for now, after the Paul Ehrlich Institute reported 7 cases of patients with blood clotting. “Today’s decision is a purely precautionary measure,” said Spahn.
  • France also took the same measure of avoiding the vaccine until the European Union’s drug regulatory agency will further investigate whether the cases are caused by exactly the AstraZeneca vaccine.
  • The European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization said that investigations should be carried out even though it defends the drug maker, as the cases are minimal compared to the number of people who have been immunized.
  • The AstraZeneca injection has been one of the most used vaccines on the European continent, and has been the protagonist of certain contractual conflicts, however, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have been used but in lesser proportion, on the other hand, the shipment of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is expected.
  • The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is awaiting the approval of the US government to be applied to its population; for the time being, the Americans have been immunized with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
  • The list of countries that have suspended the use of AstraZeneca are: Ireland, Thailand, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, Congo, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany and France. Italy only suspended the use of a certain batch.
  • Germany is attentive before the effects of the vaccine, according to the authorities there are cases of people who, 4 days after the injections have presented dizziness, headaches and hematomas; therefore they indicate that if they suffer from these complications to go to a health center as soon as possible.
